Employer request Dependant -> Work visa

Has anybody ever heard of an employer employing somebody who had a dependant visa and then requesting them to change over to a work visa.

Doesn't seem like there would be much point to me but a friend has said that his employer has requested him to do so. If for some reason the job didn't work out he would have to apply for a dependant visa again would he not?

The only reason I can think of to do this would be if the employer is concerned that the employee would moonlight (legally) for someone else at the same time.

Otherwise they are just daft. I also suspect that immigration would not agree to it anyway.

My guess is that they don't know people can work on dependent visas because for a while they could not, and may just not have kept up with the times. Suggest you just point out the relevant pages on the website.

The only situation where I can see you moving from dependant to employment is if you get divorced or if your sponsor themselves is on an employment visa and they lose their employment visa.....

Well the employer is a large MNC who are unlikely to be ignorant of the visa process so I am thinking there must be some logic behind it...

Why not ask them the reason for the request?

I am going through this as well at this very moment. It's for a couple reasons (1 really, 2 maybe)....

    1) they manage the risk if you forget to renew your dependent visa
    2) keeps your from quickly jumping ship perhaps?

that MNC doesn't happen to be headquartered in the land of chocolate and watches does it?

Has anyone tried pointing out that 1) is just as easily managed by finding out the date of your renewal and sending you a reminder? It's not like they can actually file a work visa without the employee anyway so they don't manage the risk really.

Personally I think there is some policy somewhere in head office which says that all foreigners must have work visas and nobody is smart enough to point out it's not necessary if they hold a dependent visa!

Except they have been employing said person on the dependant visa for a while already so they are aware it's not neccessary to change. strange. maybe its something to do with dankleness' second point.

I got a job on a dependant visa at a MNC. They offered to - successfully - sponsor me for a work visa which I happily accepted because we were no longer wholly dependant on my wife's job to keep us in HK. Now either of us can quit\be made redundant without overly worrying about the family's immigration status, as long as one of us remains employed.

Similarly from the employer's perspective, they reduce the chance of me getting kicked out of the country if my wife lost her work visa for whatever reason.

So for me it was a no brainer; I was going to request it if they didn't offer it. I also see a motivation for the employer, but I don't imagine every employer would do it.

Right, the employer absolutely understands we can work under a dependent visa, that's for sure...
