    Summer Internship 2009 in HK

    Hi,

This is my first post and I've read some other threads... very interesting and helpful.

I am an Engineering Physics/Electrical Engineering student with a Minor in Commerce from Canada. I just finished my 3rd year, and I have industry work experience from previous internships. I wish to return to Hong Kong next summer for an internship. I know HK is mostly a financial/business city and I would be extremely interested in doing business stuff. I've taken a few commerce/economics courses, and I'll be taking some more management courses in the fall. I want to work for Bain/ Morgan Stanley/ Goldman Sachs, or any of those multi-national companies. I speak fluent French, Cantonese (I can both read and write) and conversational Mandarin.

Can you please offer me some advice?

    Thanks a lot!

Go to their websites and apply would be the best approach.. unless you have connections there.."dont know till you try" is the phrase that comes to mind.

Also, it would be better to narrow your focus a bit as GS and MS are different from Bain in terms of function and job scope. Also what area of each firm? Back office, MO or FO?

For all those big firms, you need to apply online, through contacts, or through recruiting at your school (if they recruit there).

I'd also add that after submitting your resume etc., you should send a mini-cover letter of sorts to the recruiting director for the HK office. It just makes your application more noticable. Don't duplicate your actual cover letter, and make sure it's not too long (should be skim-able), but explain why you want to work there.

And as the previous poster said, Bain is a very different company from MS or GS (assuming you want to work as a consultant/banker). You should be aware that their recruiting and interview processes are very different, and they will be looking for different things.

    Thanks Verdelium and Engill

Yes I am going to apply online through their websites as it seems those companies won't be coming to my school. It sounds like a good idea to follow up with a cover letter. I

I am aware that the area of work is different at Bain than at the other companies that I have listed. It would be nice to work at the Bain doing some technology consulting , but at the same time after having done several internships at engineering companies, I'd like to try something new and work in investment banking/finance. I just hope they hire engineers...
