    Salary Negotiations?

hi, some of you may remember me as the sad sounding marketing grad from 2 months ago lol. Read Here for my background

Well..I guess since then there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. Got two calls for interviews, one of which is a multinational advertising firm. I will be returning to HK within the next two weeks anyway, but the funny thing is HR called me back again (after a week of the initial call) OFFERING me a phone interview, which was very surprising. Over the phone, the HR guy pretty much told me straight up that they really needed someone quick (aka desperate or I don't think I would've been offered the luxury of a phone interview). I will be having my interview over the phone in a couple of days.

I'm expecting there to be a point during the interview when they're going to ask me about salary expectations. Under the "job level" section, they did indicate it was a middle level job, and in the posting it says they want 2-3 years of experience. Seeing this is HK, not sure if the title makes a difference but the title says something like digital community manager. Moreover, they're desperate for someone

So, given all of these circumstances, is there anything I can leverage on for a higher salary? Should I ask them to name their salary range, or give my own initially? Very much a noob despite several jobs in terms of salary expectations/negotiations...In terms of the job, I feel that with my skillset and experience I am very qualified for it.

any help would be appreciated, thank you!!

From your orignal post, you're a recent Marketing Grad from Canada with HKID.

usually companies indicate the offer (same happened to me when I was a new Grad) if they ask you give them a range for example 20 -23K

Could you tell whether they are desperate for you or desperate to fill the position?

Well, considering I haven't been interviewed yet it would have to be the latter. I am a solid candidate for the job though, based on the job duties.

Unless you miss the mark completely. At which point they just don't bother to ring back. I would try to find out what they currently pay for this kind of role. Do you know anyone in the company or who recently left? Have you tried the glassdoor type websites that have salaries?

The role is a pretty new one in the marketing industry so there isn't too much data on it...did some research earlier and in the states it pays anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 USD annually (in-house). From what I know HK is a completely different market and the number probably don't apply at all to what they offer here. No, I don't know anyone in there - just applied on my own. Unfortunately glassdoor has no data.

Anyone know of a range for this kind of position?

You could try this for check for salaries: Welcome to SalaryCheck - Hong Kong's First Salary Search Engine

I can't comment on its accuracy and you may be disappointed.

Every company has a different budget, so see what they offer you, decide if it's reasonable for you and go from there.
