    protection from being fired

I was wondering what kind of protection one have in HK from being terminated. It seems like it is easy to fire an employee. This is very different from let say The Netherlands where I am from.

If someone is ill can a company then still terminate that person? Anyone knows?

    Thanks.

Well it ultimately depends on the terms on your contract and there should be some sort of guide to the disciplinary process in the company handbook.

No, a company cannot terminate an employee who is officially sick:
Can an employer dismiss an employee who is on paid sick leave ?

There are no protection in Hong Kong, and you can be fired without any warning or notice. You are paid to work, and no work means no pay, or even your job. Work and stay a long time. Play, and return to your home country.

That is complete rubbish. There is a lot of protection here (see vmlinuz link). However, as in most countries employers will find a "legal" way of getting rid of employees they no longer require.

If you want Dutch levels of job protection then feel free to pay Dutch levels of tax. HK is a capitalist society, not a socialist one. It has its pros and its cons. If the cons exceed the pros for you then maybe HK is not the place for you.

Can someone tell me how these answers are related to the factual question (which, to my understanding of the english language, wasn't asking _for_ stronger employee protection) the OP asked??

The information behind the link leghk posted is very detailed, I wish the German government was able to produce such concise explanations (Or laws that even can explained in a simple way...). In a nutshell, there apparently are protections against abuse of the employers power (such as he may not fire an employee for being an union activist), but he may fire you, with proper notice, at will if you're healthy, not on maternity leave, but just not working well enough to his standards.
