yeah, the government knows best, right?
The gvt really?Original Post Deleted
Dude, the gvt is selling its city..they would say anything....
I get paid double what I would make in the UK doing a similar job there. That makes me happy. It helps that I love HK too!
TB, for info Plymouth is a cosmopolitan city...
"Those of us who live on the south west peninsula know all about lifestyle. For the counties of Devon and Cornwall offer unsurpassed beauty and unparalleled opportunity for enjoyment. From secluded sandy coves to wild and rugged moors, they offer more scope for sport and leisure than almost anywhere else in Britain. Sandwiched between the two counties is Plymouth - a vibrant and cosmopolitan city graced with a setting amongst the finest in Europe"
Hull too
"
One of England's 10 largest cities, Hull combines a strong maritime past with a confident, cosmopolitan present to offer an exhilarating urban experience
"
Need I continue?
If you believe what the gvt or tourism board try to sell you.....
Ah ok, that's what I thought you were doing your usual baiting...(ie "nobody being of course nobody, not even one soul in hk..right..")Original Post Deleted
Fine, have a good day TB...and pity Pin once got caught in the middle.
+ Energetic and highly diligent work force; hard working with can do attitude
+ Low tax rates
+ Easy commutes
+ Lots of stat holidays and close travel destinations to use them on
+ Expats are held to higher regards and get away with more crap than would be acceptable elsewhere
+ Network is incredibly cozy , even incestuous depending on your viewpoint
+ Lots of opportunities to attract the opposit sex (esp if you are male)
- Hot muggy weather makes suit wearers weary
- Long hours and more specifically late night conf calls to fit in NY and Ldn times
- Sometimes lack of common sense is all too common
- Highly competitive - for some this is a + for others this is a -
- High living costs (ie housing)
- Too much power is concentrated in small pockets meaning choices are few
What constitutes cosmopolitan?
Well, cosmopolitan comes from the Greek word kosmopolitês, which in a nutshell means ' world citizen '
That could mean on face value a people that possess:
Awareness of the outside world, culturally and politically.
Cultivated, well read, well traveled, multilingual, multicultural
and so on, and so on.
So, HK could be considered cosmopolitan depending on what view point, it does welcome expats in general, Hong Kong people also like to travel overseas for leisure, business and to study, so that would scrape in as aspects of the definition. But agree that to most western raised folks, it isn't as overtly cosmopolitan compared to overtly cosmopoltan cities like: Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington, Auckland, London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam,
Stockholm etc etc etc etc
I'll use a Pin type of answer to justify it all, that the level of cosmopolitan definition between one city and another will ' vary ' greatly from one to another. lol
My definition would be...
I would hazard a guess that majority of the homogenous, patriarchal cultures of this world would be far less cosmopolitan than say, mainstream egalitarian multicultural societies which is a generally western ideal/concept. No ?
