i'm guessing the obvious negative is you are not guaranteed a constant work-stream, like if you are employed.

Pros : Increased flexibility and ability to negotiate payment rates and other terms
Cons : Lack of the normal benefits associated with a full-time position (steady salary, medical benefits, etc etc)
