Moving to HK from the UK - Finding a job

    Hi everyone,

I am looking to move to HK from the UK in the next few months, and I'm just after some advice. I have lived in the UK from birth, have a Maths degree from the University of Manchester, and have been working for a financial services company for the past 2 years. I've been in my current role (Business Support Specialist) for 14 months, and mainly involves data/business analysis, and other elements of operations support.

I'm looking for a job as a Data Analyst (or something similar) in HK. I can speak Cantonese, but my writing is only basic, and I have a HKID. I already have a place to stay in HK (relatives) so the only blocker currently is finding a job.

I've been applying for jobs online for around a month, mostly through sites like JobsDB, and a few directly on companies' websites. I've not had any response yet apart from someone from Adecco who said that my profile looked interesting but said that I would need to be in HK before they could set any interviews up as most companies would want face-to-face interviews.

My initial plan was to find a job before I moved over, but I'm considering whether I should just hand my notice in at work and go... I would be staying with relatives so I would be OK even if it was a few months before I found anything. I'm torn right now on what to do...

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Nobody will consider you unless you are here. Networking is the best way to get a job. Use your contacts.

    Use your network

Financial industry isn't too hot right now as a lot of lay offs so it'll be tough and you will be competing with a lot of locals that have recently been laid off.

Jobsdb doesn't always have the good jobs so don't rely on that.

Use recruiters such as Michael Page, Robert Half etc but again they won't seriously consider you for roles when you're not physically in HK.

Why HK? Now it's not a good time to come due to the current job climate.

Unless your uk job is not worth sacrificing, come here for a few months, plenty of bbc here, but the job market is the best at the moment

Also consider backup career, such as teaching, do a Tefl in UK cos it's much cheaper than hk
