    Question Contract work in HK

    Hi there,

There might be a position with a large bank in HK, The money seems right. But it's not a perm position, but rather a contract. They say all I get is 7 days of vacation per year, my money, obviously, and that's it. So, what additional questions should I ask them? What should I take into consideration other than the actual job (which seems interesting)?

I am single, no family to relocate.

I already understand that I will have to get my own medical insurance. The agent mentioned 300-400 HKD per month - does that sound reasonable?

Anything else you can think of?

I am a software engineer. Not a manager or anything, but quite senior both in terms of years of experience and the pay (from what I gather). I will try to increase my vacation, obviously, if they actually make an offer. They are very unlikely to give anything else from what I understand, i.e. no relocation packages nor accommodation.

    Anything else comes to mind?

    Welcome to Hong Kong.

Ask for more money, hehe. Unless you know what to expect housing wise.

Are they sponsoring an employment visa? There is public healthcare here so you could do without the private medical, but private medical will be more pleasant.

Those are the basics, money, annual leave, notice period or contract dates.

If you are senior, 7 days is horrible and bare minimum by law, should be 25-30 days at a management level.

I checked the housing costs - looks like 15-20K HKD per month will get me sorted, right? This will leave plenty for the piggy in the bank, even after taking care of the entertainment budget.

They will handle the visa application from what I gather. I will double check they are paying for it.

How much is decent private health care per month?

I am a senior developer, but not a manager. Will definitely try to push for more vacation...

If you are healthy and young, a quote from Manulife / AIG (local insurance) will run you about 3-8K a year depending on the coverage and your deductibles. Our deductible is quite high ($10-15K HKD) so the insurance is good only for major medical and it is very reasonable.

Look around the forums for private health care costs.

how long is the contract for, 7 days is NOT enough, fight for at least double of that. if your single and earning the $$$, plenty of countries to visit near HK for peanuts on no frill airlines, you'll need the vacations to visit as many as you can

Some countries nearby for great piss up weekends

Thanks, that's useful. I'm first of all trying to get the big picture. I am healthy and not too old
