If everyone is outstanding, then that makes everyone average. No joke, this is the bullshit that comes out of HR people's mouths and they force me to rank 30% of my staff as below average or shit regardless of how they really are. Yes I try to hire only outstanding people, but if I am successful in this task then that punishes 30% of them. So I try not to be too successful in my hiring

I would say it depends how your company is doing as well. If they are struggling then just keeping your job is a bonus. If they are doing well and you helped make that happen you should get a share of the upside.
