    Question Potential Working Taboo?

Hey all, just started working in HK and was wondering about this situation since work culture here is a bit different. I started my new job and still under probation in one section of the company.

It's not the position I wanted, and I don't think there will be growth or development for me. Then there is a posting for a more desirable position at the same company but under a different supervisor.

So is it frowned upon to apply for this other job position even though I just started? Should I notify my current supervisor of my intentions? I know if I go for the interview I still may not get the position, will it compromise my probation?

So that's basically it, I don't mind my current job at the moment but I can't overlook the potential opportunity.

How formal is the hiring process? Perhaps a quick informal chat with the hiring supervisor might help?

Something along the lines of "heard you're hiring.. what are you really looking for"

if its a big organization and its a perm role, i don't think they will like it if you look for internal switches after 1 week.. but after two years its quite acceptable practise.

    Is your manager a baby?

I had this exact same situation many years ago when working for a major housing association in the U.K. I wanted to head the Hemel Hempstead Team which would have put me under the Bucks. director but my second choice was the St. Albans Team which put me under the Berks. director.

I was offered the St. Albans post first and advised them at that point that I was also being interviewed for the Bucks. post.

Hmm, I didn't get the Bucks. post and, looking back now...I wonder if Lesley had a word in Vicky's ear. FML

Anyway, what employer thinks that their employees are in their dream jobs?

i would treat it like jobs at different companies due to your situation.

You have only worked in the first department for a week, so you don't have the reputation or internal credit for supervisors to be fighting over you.

Your current supervisor would treat you the same way as if they found out any employee was actively looking for another job. Which is not favourably.

Just wait until you have actually achieved something in your current section first, then you will have more support to get the role you actually want.

I don't think this would be looked at favourably in any work culture. If I was your current manager I would wonder why you took your current job if you didn't like it. All that effort to recruit you then you want to sod off. Your new potential manager would wonder if you would do it again. I don't think you have to wait two years but a few months at least.

Looking for a new job while you're still in probation is not a good idea, unless you're pretty sure you won't pass probation.

Even if you successfully get the job, you'll be forever explaining in the future why you only did your current job for a short period.

If you don't get your job, there's a reasonable chance your current manager will find out you were looking.

Moderate to large size companies usually have policies requiring staff to be in a role for a period of time before they can even apply for a new role internally.
