    Piling/Construction Jobs in HK

    Hi,

My husband and I have recently moved to HK and are indefinitely sponsored by my employer. My husband is having real difficulty getting work here or getting any useful feedback from potential employers or the construction recruiters where he is busily enquiring.

We understand that the timing for construction jobs is far from ideal so any advice or recommendations in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

He has 10 years experience in piling, partly made up of drill rig operations (at varying depths and types of piling) and partly made up of site & staff management from a foundation perspective - so not full site project management. He doesn't have a degree just on the job training & experience.

    Any (much needed) advice?

Well the government are still pushing ahead with a lot of building projects even with the current economic downturn thus you neeed to contact them to see who they are sub contracting the work out too.

Of course the main issue is if he doesn't speak Cantonese as he will be mainly dealing with Local contractors and builders.

Thanks Jimbo. He doesn't speak Cantonese - I know that's yet another obstacle. We will contact the govt just incase it produces any leads.

    Appreciate your feedback.

I would suggest that in between his search he take a lesson or two in simple and functional Cantonese. On a construction site employers will want to know that he could at least ask for help in Cantonese if an emergency situation was to occur.

He should not give up there are a lot of foreigners that work on Hong Kong and Macau sites, Australians, Brits, Indians, Pakistanis all along side each other with Chinese colleagues as well.

Some are general laborers others are foreman, engineers, safety officers. Know of two Australians and one Scot who have been here about 10 or more years that are laborers.
