A few ideas;
- be open to contract work
- be open to being a remote worker for a company not in HK
- consider system integrator type companies and other consulting types looking to deliver dev projects for their clients
What’s your stack?
If I were you, I’d try to land a permanent role at an investment bank and just stay there.
Hi snjt
I try not to bind myself to a single stack. I am a generalist that is comfortable with any language and any environment. Unfortunately, firms don't want generalists these days. They want somebody to match their stringent requirements. Any deviation is an automatic pass. People who are not versed in technology don't understand what generalists can bring to the table, so they come up with strict requirements and any person not meeting those requirements are automatically passed. That being said, my core strength is Java, Linux and Equities execution.
"Staying long term" is easier said than done. I have been at a variety of IBs through my career + Fintech + buy side. I always try to stay as long as possible wherever I am at. However situations may arise where staying long term may not work out well. Also some people frown upon staying too long (30 years for example). Things change while you are in a role that are outside your control. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes for the worse. In my last role I fell afoul of office politics and ultimately decided that it was in my best interest to leave. Things change sometimes for the worse which may make it impossible to stay long term. It is hard to say on day one if I can stay at an IB for a long time.
Ultimately, I am a long termer and that is my goal with the next role I land (or any role). To stick it out as long as possible. I just hope that the stars align where I get a good manager and a good culture.
