Is it the same. Big companies don't give 13th month pay.. I am not sure if they give the Chines New Year bonus.. specially because of the financial crisis...any comments?

neither is mandatory by law... although some people do think it is.
some companies don't give anything
some companies give one or the other
some only give give one or the other to a selected few
some companies will give 13 months to all employees then for a selected few give an additional bonus
some give candy or some sort of small token gift of "thanks" and recognition

It's pretty common and it will be mentioned in your contract and when you join. Rather bogus being called a bonus as it's completely unrelated to personal or company bonus, but maybe some great companies use bad times as an excuse to pull it.
If you are on a contract, then check your contract cause you may have a contract gratuity bonus (which is basically a guranteed bonus - usually a extra months pay). If you are permanent stafff, then bonus is up to company, some will give and some won't...depends on the boss.
