Short-Term Jobs in HK? Nanny/Babysitter/Web Editor

    Hi,

I'm thinking about coming to HK for the summer (joining a friend who'll be working at a bank). I currently live in New York where I work as a web editor and babysit on a regular basis. In the past, I have worked as a nanny. I have my BA and am a native English and basic Spanish speaker. However, I speak no Mandarin or Canto.

I know very little about the job market in HK (especially for summer/short-term type jobs), and I am wondering if this is even a viable option. Would I be able to get a, say, three month nannying/babysitting job? What about working for a website? I understand you may not know any/all of the answers, but any insight is much appreciated!

    Thank you!

Would say that you best bet is to approach friends/relatives/network that's already established in HK for the summer work you are interested in.

HK is a world city and has been affected by the financial woes of the world... There's less opportunities for work by the conventional means like sending emails for summer internships.

Native English and 'oversea BAs' is 10 to a penny here... Your Spanish maybe a valuable selling point (not sure). Try internship with a Spanish company in HK that YOU HAVE ALREADY approached/secured a job with in NYC might be a good bet and save time before you get here.

You could get a kind helping hand from someone from this forum...

Good luck with your summer job hunt. Ken

It is illegal.... think about what happens to the Mexicans who work illegally in the US.

Just because you don't need a coyote to end up here in HK, it does not mean what you're doing is legal.

FYI - I'd not be using your full name as the username. Drop us a note on [email protected] with a couple of options and we'll change it for you.

Thanks, to both of you. I think I will look for a nannying/babysitting job; my housing is taken care of and of course, I have savings from New York, so I don't necessarily need a full-time job. If you have any suggestions of specific spots that might have listings, please let me know.

What part of "it is illegal" don't you get?

Or is it some god given sense of entitlement that you're above the law because you have savings from New York and know someone who works in a bank here in HK?

I am shutting this thread down. I think you're better of on another website where the women seem to spend way too much time complaining about their current helpers.
