Are there any legal guarantees on lunch breaks in hong kong?

Like I know in some places, you're legally guaranteed a lunch break if you work an eight hour day, or something like that.

Is there anything similar in hk?

I called the labour department several months ago to check on this, and actually, no, there are no such provisions. Things seem heavily weighted in favour of employers here.

If you're concerned, you can just call them up directly- there's a hotline number that you can probably turn up via a quick Google.

i thought that every 4 hours u work, you are entitled to a break for rest and food. I remember when working parttime in MCD a long long time ago that even they let workers rest and eat for every 4 hours they worked.

There is a provision in the Employment of Young Persons (Industry) Regulations that says that people employed between the ages of 15 and 18 must have at least 30 minutes break after 5 hours of work, but I don't see anything for adults.

    damn kids...

its bad enough that we only get about 14 days of holiday and they get summer holidays, christmas holidays, easter holidays, chinese new year holidays...

as for lunch breaks... i think it should depend on your job... if you have something important to do, then you should continue it. if i come up to 1pm and i hav something to finish, i would rather complete the task first rather than stopping and forgetting and taking a few mintues to catch up when restarting. its not like i would starve by not eating until 2pm...

and if you are in admiralty or central, you would probably prefer a later lunch break so you can avoid the crowds

Thanks for that scintillating insight into Hong Kong labour regulations. Got any more gems to add about the airspeed of unladen African swallows, perhaps?

OP: Here's the contact details for the labour dept if you want to confirm for yourself but they'll probably tell you the same thing as they told me. I was pretty amazed by the lack of mandatory rest breaks in Hong Kong. http://www.labour.gov.hk/eng/enquiry/enq_com.htm
