At 8K/month you don't pay any tax at all! (except 5% into MPF which is savings not tax)

Every self-professed graphic designer should be thinking out-of-the-box to get ahead in the game. Maybe that's why the pay is so low here. GD's in HK have just become just another commodity. The employers pay you according to what they think you're worth or according to market value.

Are you just another graphic designer? Or are you Andy Warhol?

Millou: My advice is get a good portfolio.
Show a limited amount of work, that is exceptional in quality.
Excellent typographic layout, good color balance, and composition.
A strong concept, not just a flyer of a phone and an text with the model and specs, with some "aqua" effect on a box/button.

And keep it to about 5-10 samples.

Make sure to promote the good things about you.
Not just im great in Photoshop.

More like: my strength are in composition and lightning", with good sense of typography.

I have good teamwork skills, and can follow a Creative brief.

And no one will care if you know Photoshop, Ai, AE etc. anyone can learn a program so unless its a specific point in the classified ad, don't make it your primary selling point.

    /Johan

Oh and write some details of each work sample, and include info what you did in the project, all of it inc. taking photos, editing, text copy etc.
Or perhaps you just added a text box to a design provided to you.

JohanSWE has a very good point. Only show your very best work during the interview. And don't use someone else's work to display. They'll catch you out very soon.

Thanks for the tips JohanSWE! If I'm mailing my portfolio together with my cv and cover letter. Do I show the same works at the interview? Or is it better to show other works?

Ronnie yeoh: Are there designer that'll show someone else's work? Isn't that the same as acknowledging you're not a good designer so you have to show someone else's work?? I think every designer with a bit of pride won't do that...
