The reactions to the 'r' word had me scurrying to dictionary.com - drew a blank. Then google - this time pretty interesting results, with lucky strike on the first one checked out: ...on fourth vol of Dictionary of American Regional English: from 'PA' to 'SKUNK-DRUNK'. Read all of it or scroll down to the very end where the best is kept for last. Relieved to know Canada has been in existence since at least some time in 'the second half of the 20th century'.
(Sorry, it IS turning into a chat thread; maybe a-y should start a new one - but minus big 'r' words suddenly thrown in from way out of left field).
FYI rantankerous was popular in the American Civil war by Confederate soldiers to describe 'Yankees'. Means someone who is pretentious, vulgar and so forth. I know this because I am a bit of a war history buff.
Sorry we hijacked your thread aceyang; we would love to help you but we aren't familiar with your desired field.
