You need to have another job offer if you want to get promoted. If you don't have another job offer, they won't take your threat seriously and they will continue to use you. That's free market baby!

IF you are expecting a promotion or think you deserve a promotion, I would think that you need to build up your case, ie: what you've done for the company. . . even if the boss claims your ideas, but it originated from you as you stated. . . there should be some sort of a paper trail. Is there a written review, if so write under your goal "expect to be promoted. . .etc", so it is in black and white, and no hemming and hawing when the time comes.

So assuming you get your promotion, then yeah. . . if you don't what is your alternative? Look for your alternative NOW. .. the current job market might not be in your favor, but if you plan for the future, and the promotion still doesn't come through, then you will be in a better position to move on to some place that hopefully appreciates you more. . . or at least have an offer to dangle in front of your boss.

From doing reference checks with very senior executives these days, there are a lot of bosses in Asia who never see their subordinate managers in action with their direct reports (which is shocking). This means that these executives cannot be doing the correct executive role and that is focus on succession planning at least two levels down as they never see these guys in action.

If your boss is the selfish kind who doesn't want to lose you, you might get screwed. If your boss is a fully competent executive or senior manager who wants to be known as developing people for promotion you might have a better chance. If the culture of the organization is the latter then you'd be fine. It doesn't sound like it is so the best you can do is get your boss in a career planning discussion and ask what you need to do specifically to get promoted. It might not work but that is better than alienating him or her.

this question is so simple. If they don't value you as an employee and you really think you deserve more pay then start looking for another job with a higher pay. Obviously if you haven't gotten any higher offers you are doing something wrong.
