Want to return to HK after growing up in the USA

I would of imagined growing up in a country you would tend to stay put than go back to HK. I read so many comments from BBC's who say that HK is shit n so on. Makes me giggle as all countries have pros n cons and I tell u UK has a lot more than HK. The one thing really hate about HK is the Gov which is like kids play. Like FFS how on earth can that Long hair get into Legco!!!

Those who have ROA in another country are lucky as we can leave when we please. I feel sorrie for those who would like to leave but cant.

Thanks to everyone who responded! How do I know which companies speak only English (or use primarily English) in their workplace?

To JumboJet, I grew up in Los Angeles. Nothing wrong with Los Angeles...just bored out of my mind with a lot cultural and political nonsense here that I can no longer identify with. I know Hong Kong has its flaws. But I've been to Hong Kong ten times in the last five years so I know what I'm getting into. Being an American citizen, I can always return to the states if I get tired of Hong Kong.

Have you considered moving to China? You would have to take around ~1 year off to learn Mandarin, but this you can pick up quickly with some Cantonese background. You can add another language to your abilities.

The job market is quite reasonable here too, assuming you are willing to accept lower pay than HK. The only point is that programming is one sector in which local Chinese are quite competitive in - assuming you have 3-4 years experience though you could shoot for a supervisory / mgmt role.

I have no illusions of grandeur about Hong Kong. It's not like I saw a feature of Hong Kong on the Travel Channel and decided I wanted to move there. I've been to Hong Kong twice a year for the last five years and know what I'm getting into.

I guess the reason I'd try life in Hong Kong is only becuase I have ROA in the US and can leave whenever I please.

HK government may be "kids play", but US government is worse (especially California's state government).

i moved to hk from australia 6 weeks ago. ive been to hk 5 times each time was for 1 month holiday at the end of the year. i grew up in australia and im 25. i was working in australia and i resigned from my job to go to hk. i landed not knowing what i would do but came here to try. i checked jobsdb and classifiedpost every day and got a job in the first week. i speak very basic cantonese and have had no problems finding jobs and interviews in english. actually i only use cantonese with my friends. when im shopping or at work i only use english and im working in IT. i have a friend who moved to hk from australia a year ago. he got a job in 2 weeks and is in banking. i thought a recruitment firm could help me to find work and understand the market but the ones i contacted only wanted to get my cv by email and i never heard back from them.

What kind of jobs in HK do you expats find is easiest to get for those with a degree from a US/Canadian/European university and with slightly limited Cantonese skills?

OK, jobs other than teaching English.
