Hi Mat,
I'm currently doing a part-time course at Hong Kong University and have a lot of time on my hands but unfortunately no experience. I am a native English speaker and would love to do some teaching. Could you send me a link for the TEFL course that you completed? And what job did you get upon completion of the course?
Just another curious expat!
Cheers.
Hello everyone..
I am an Indian and have recently moved to Hongkong with my husband. I am eligible to work on a dependent spouse visa. I would be interested in teaching languages- English to be precise, in Hong Kong.
I believe that some certifications have to be completed in order to be eligible to teach in schools and language centres.
Can anyone please guide me as to which certification course, provided by which Institute would be a good option to try. I am open to doing an intensive session and then looking for a job.
Please help me out!
Thanks!
TEFL or TESOl would be a good start.
Do a google search for Daves ESL Cafe which will have a ton of information for you to look through.
I'm going to have to warn you now though you may have issues with some language centres because of your skin colour and also if you're not a Native speaker.
Well.. since I am from India, would that pose a problem? I am able to converse in English fluently, and even after having completed the course, would there still be an issue?
Its the parents not the centres themselves that are to blame, They seem to want their little prince or princess to be taught by some blonde blue eyed american.
I'm ethnically Chinese and have TEFL and am a Native English speaker and I have had issues before with language centres.
As long as your accent is not too strong then you should still be able to find something.
I agree, there is a ton of information on Dave's ESL, but prepare to be looked down upon by the inhabitants if you dare to ask questions about online TFL courses. To them, nothing less than a PGDE should get you employed anywhere, ever.
Of course, in HK many learning centres will employ you with such an online course - some, even without. But don't expect lucrative NET wages. Nevertheless, you may pull in at about 15K basically being a "white face" kindergarten teacher - the local teachers will do all the dirty work like taking care of the kids. Or you can get 23-25K being more of an "actual" teacher who has to do all the class prep and take more care of the kids.
Regarding not being a "white" face; sure, it will make things harder, but I know of Indian, Asian, and black teachers here. They will like you even better that you don't need sponsorship. It also (hopefully) gives more freedom to job hunt if hubby can pay the bills.
Hi,
I want to do a TEFL course in Hong Kong. I would prefer if most of the course work could be done online, with say 20 hrs. of contact instruction. Could anyone recommend a suitable TEFL Training Organisation that is based in HK, and its qualification is recognised all over the world. pads
