    MPF Question

I was under the impression that paying MPF was a legal requirement in HK. I’ve completed the forms to join MPF, but when I noticed the deductions weren’t being made from my salary I asked my employer about it, and was told that it will only commence in my 14th month of employment. Is this normal? I don’t have a copy of my contract with me so I will check tonight, but I don’t remember any mention of a time lag before I / they start paying MPF.

If you are on a work visa, then yes, MPF starts on the 14th mth.

That’s annoying, I miss out on $14000 from my employer! Just read the rules online – you are exempt if from overseas and employed for less than 13 months. I think this is a bit of an odd interpretation of the rule – I’m on a permanent contract, but my work visa is my first one and so of course only valid for 12 mths.

When my visa is renewed for another 2 years, if I were to then switch employer, again on a permanent contract, would contributions start straight away?

This is not something I’d accounted for, and if so I’ll have to work out extra payments to my pension this year.

Don't count on your MFP for anything.
