I think that its better for your gals to go as a group rather than alone. Less chance of being set up for a rob.

ck123, I've been busy and am not sure when I will go next, but will let you know.
motoHK, it's really not that bad in Shenzhen though you hear all these horrible stories about getting mugged. I never go near Tung Mun, everything is fake including money, and that's where a lot of the muggings taken place.
Unless you go to Shenzhen for business meetings, always dress down...T-shirt & jeans will do. Always act as if you know where the heck you're going even when you don't, don't ever stop a passerby for directions, ignore the beggars holler at them if needed...etc.
OK, thanks. I feel better though I would personally pack a weapon of some sort.
hey
For an interesting day out check out Dong Men which is just out of exit A on the third dot of the MTR map(I thik its called Lao Jie). My mother in law (who is cunning like a fox) showed us some great places to shop araound and there is all kinds of weird and wonderful malls full of crazy stuff. Great massage place too, buy tickets for 300 and get 12 hours worth of massage. I do tip ontop of that of course...
If you wander around the area you cn find some great art supply shops, interesting pearl and stone market and a funky little old style house thing in the middle of a square (admittedly next to a toilet) where you can go in and watch people paint. Not everyone's idea of a good time but hey... Best thing is that the macdonalds is in a big building with a faux old chinese roof which is easy to navigate around from.
According to some inside sources (people who can actually read chinese above a grade 1 level *ahem*) us non permenant residents will soon be able to cross the border with just our ID cards - only the Hong Kong side though.
We have never found Shen Zhen particularily dangerous, but then we tend to leave valuables at home, so that if we are pickpocketed all we would lose is a bit of money. Liverpool on a Saturday night was way worse!
If you are buying a lot - bring a suitcase, stuff doesn't fall off of it. Even better, just make a cheap suitcase your first purchase of the day and you are sorted...
Shenzhen is fine, been there 3 times. Lo Wu is ok, just be hard when you bargain, once you get use to it, its fine. Only been into centre of Shenzhen once and seemed ok. I think its reputation is outlived, just be careful like you would in any place. A good combination is shopping then spa/massage at Carnival Club or Queens. We got regulary, so keep in touch
Where's Carnival Club? We've only ever been to Queens' spa, which is getting more expensive, and not as good as it used to be!
