Thanks, I went through Canon website but there are so many that I am confused which one is good.
Any particular model number you would recommend?

Cameras are quite personal. I doubt there is such a thing as the "best" one. Like anything, it depends what you want. So you need to think about what your friend might like ... small to fit in a purse, or really simple to use, or ' with every bell and whistle', or best picture quality, or 'looks fashionable with my new clothes' and so on!!!!

My criteria for me, for example was 1. waterproof; 2. tiny and lightweight 3. decent picture quality

    Didn't care about anything else.

Is this "very dear person" at all familiar with photography? Would they have any clue what to do with a camera that allowed full manual controls, or do they just want a simple point and shoot only? And do they want a dencent size optical zoom lens?

As with DM I like Canons although I find the Ixuses (Ixi?) a little small and fiddly for my hands. I have had a Canon SX200is for a year or so now and been very happy with it.

simple to use, small to fit in purse and decent picture quality, basically nothing very fashionable or complicated.

I have the ixus 100 which is a 12mp camera. The photos are of a very good quality. Even a guy like me who doesn't know anything about cameras can make good photos. I bought it one year ago for HKD 2100 at DSC. Now it must be way below HKD 2000.

You can read the reviews on internet of the other models though or have the salesperson make some photos in the store so that you can compare the different models.

You can try browsing this site for some ideas:

The Best Digital Cameras - photo.net

Then just go into a shop and have a look at them. Pick up the small, compact ones, try taking a photo to see how easy it is. Reviews are the best way to judge photo quality to have a look at those before you go in.

no, actually she would prefer simple point and shoot.

Canon Ixus 105 @ HK$1880 would be my recommendation based on those simple requirements.
