Groupon with surprising deal - Expensive than real price

I have found Sanyo VPC-PD1 full HD digital camcorder @ 1299.

$1299 for a Sanyo VPC-PD1 full HD digital camcorder plus gift set ($2698 value)

Groupon is claiming it as as 52 % discount.

some stores in HK sells it for $ 950.

I feel sorry about those buyers who may feel as being cheated when they think abt their product worth.

    Caveat emptor.

The same vendor was selling them online for $1190 back in February.

    Would this be legal?

I also found a number of Groupon's holiday pacakges more expensive than if you book directly with the hotel and get separate air tickets (which normally would be the MOST expensive way of doing things, compared to, say, through a competent travel agent).

Not meaning to be too much of a cynic, but somehow I am not surprised given the, erm, "colourful" background of Groupon's founder.

I cannot fathom even the basic case for this.

Groupons much like Ebay bidding is always subject to bidder frenzy and paying more than retail. The discounts advertised, much like US stores is from the MSRP, which no one ever charges.

Interesting side note, check the prices on HomeDepot.com the MSRP for products actually fluctuates.

What I meant was, is it legal to offer a customer a "sale price" (ie lower price) saying that it was originally a much higher price when that wasn't the case?

Retail prices in HK are bullshit anyway. Most of the prices are inflated and then discounted to look like a good price.
