yeah i guess so... it just doesn't look very 'upscale' (spotlight) compared to the glitz of other stores here in HK... i can understand the art supplies etc, but they sell bedsheets / comforters etc, which you can kinda get at many other places like Citistore / Pricerite (??) or Log-on in Festival walk. the white shelving in spotlight just seems kinda depressing (a little picky as a marketing guy...) I would think that if spotlight opened in HK, they should at least try to match the asthetics / shopping experience of what HK consumers expect... and create a little nicer shopping experience. It just seemed that they didn't do any adaptation for the HK market and just plopped their exact store from aussie into the mall.
When you look at foreign retail ventures that have experienced success here, they tend to adapt to the tastes/needs of the local market - eg. McDonald's / KFC / Pizza Hut (mainly delivery back in the states / but a 'nice / somewhat upscale restaurant experience' here)
I use slabs of wood which I refinish myself and hang them from the ceilings to create art like partitions. They can swing or you can anchor them to the floor too so they don't move.
I still love doing DIY home stuff.
Nah, we're not rich and i'm not suggesting they should go up-market (in terms of price). I guess it's just a different kind of shopping experience... sorry didn't mean to sound all 'up-market' (we're actually totally down-market if anything... :-) ) it's just that I think if an overseas retailer want to truly be successful in any country, they should try to tailor their stores closer to the local shopping experience, doesn't hurt to learn from other retail marketers (eg. mcdonald's restaurants here are sparkling clean compared to the many of the ones in the states - doesn't mean the prices are more expensive -McD's HK prices are actually the cheapest in the world! - at the same time half of their 50 busiest stores in the world are in HK!! that's true success) It would seem to me that if Spotlight wants to really be the 'go-to' destination in HK, they may want to tailor their shopping experience a little bit. ;-)
