    Oriental Stores, also in Wanchai,
    Sangam Stores, in Kennedy Town,

Oriental is padlocked, there was talk of them moving to the first floor, but seems better sense has prevailed and they have sold out.

    Max! wtf be this Sangam??

Thank you most kindly for the address- my brusqueness was entirely due a lack of a java jolt earlier.

Ah good old Catchick Street-haven't been down there in ages

Hope to trundle down there soon but will be giving East India a miss if is like the others in the chain-too chinese for my taste

    Indian Groceries

Hi, I would definitely look for them in TST but my advice be careful of a store called New Delhi Store as the owner is exceptionally rude and behaves as if he is obliging you if he is selling to you.

We have had a few headaches with him in delivery as well as once he specified one price of a product in the shop at the time of booking the order and when the delivery arrived along with the product the price was very high than what he quoted at the shop. Upon inquiring he refused to accept his error and the item was sent back. Later upon a subsequent visit we once again on a visit found the same item at the same lower price as quoted in the shop earlier. Upon questioning teh employee he informed us that although we had asked for product made from Australia the boss charged the invoice for the same from India which was higher. However, even after realising his mistake the boss refused to accept his mistake as the employee suggested to us that the boss has a gigantic ego.

Anyway then during one delivery he sent one item short although it was billed in the invoice which he never gives you to check in the shop while placing the order. Upon calling the owner was totally arrogant and informed us that the same would be sent to us soon and hung up.

As expected the short delivered item never came for nearly 2 weeks inspite of several calls and reminders. Finally we visited the shop after making a call to them about our visit for the purpose and the boss made us wait at the shop for 15 minutes, as if we were standing in line for free soup, because he was doing some accounting. Finally when he did speak to us he started to cross examine us about the missing item and quantity as if we were trying to ask for a larger quantity or something.

We felt he was speaking as if he was obliging us with free groceries, we then came to know that many people had similar experiences with this shop and had stopped shopping with them. We too changed our grocer.

I've had experiences with most of these stores that supply Indian necessities.

    In Kowloon:
I would avoid most of the stores in CKM. They don't deliver to all areas and will only deliver to other areas if you order above a specific amount. The only one I would recommend would be the shop on the 1st floor right after the escalator (the name escapes me), the others are all completely useless. I rarely buy anything from them unless if I'm looking for something in particular as the larger set ups tend to have a better range of products available.

I would recommend Kiran's store in Mirador. Well stocked, great range,
good prices, prompt delivery service. Same with Maharaja Stores on Carnavon Road. Knowledgeable owner, good range, prompt delivery.

    On HK Island:
I would avoid Indian Provision Stores in Wanchai (Bowrington Road), as I've had a number of bad experiences with them (though others may think differently). They may serve most of the community here and have a pretty good range of products, the biggest drawback is the manager's surly attitude and issues with DELAYS in delivery.

I would prefer Oriental Stores instead on Sharp Street East. They've been there for the longest time, have no attitudes or airs and ensure quick deliveries.

Other stores here include Four Seasons Stores on Queen's Road West in Sai Ying Pun. Smallish setup, not much on offer, and don't have reliable deliveries (only in the immediate vicinity and nowhere else).

I've heard of others located out in eastern end of the island and a few others in NT, but don't know them too well.

    Thanks Vrindavan

I agree with you that the Indian Provision stores in Chung King Mansion are absolutely junk, they have quality problems, delivery problems, missing price tags and above all lack of basic mannerisms. I have also personally had bad experiences with New delhi store as well as Indian Provision stores in CKM, the oldie boss as Indian Prov Stores deliberately delivers the wrong brand of the item even after you have specified the brand. And ALWAYS the brand he delivers is either nearing the expiry or most likely more expensive than the one you requested and he confirmed as having in stock.

Many times we have just let go and accepted the more expensive item but it became a habit with him so once we called to argue with him as to why each and every delivery has the same problem and he turned abusive. From that day we stopped buying from him. The New Delhi Store guy behaves as if he is doing you a favor if he is selling you something and as though we are beggars and he is running a charitable business. His quality is many times very poor. Although his prices are same as others in CKM but if you see his grains are on many occasions the tiniest versions of the grain you may have ever seen. One more tip, look at his grains before wash and they look the proper color, wash them and you see the colored water coming out and finally after wash they are almost a totally dull color compared to before wash. Artificial colors added to grains to make them look attractive are very harmful and sometimes carcinogenic.

Shall try the Maharaja or such other stores as recommended by Vrinda and some of you in future.
