Because it is easier to burn fingers with lighters especially for those people who do not know how to use them.

cos with lighters, you can fiddle with the valve and create a mini flame thrower ( for killing pest and burning fingers trying to light bbq's)

We also have this problem at home now, the auto-lighter on our gas-stove doesn't work any more, and we have to use ciggrette lighter to start a fire and that is a bit annoying and sometime finger-scorching, same with lighting the candles.

Some people prefer them for lighting cigars and pipes too: they feel the lower temperature makes for a better smoke.

BTW, I'm glad to see the Double Happiness matches are still around. They were everywhere when I was a kid.

Off old memories, the best thing about stick matches was being able to annoy friends by flicking burning matches at them. Or making tiny little rockets with two matches and a bit of tinfoil.

Admittedly, neither are such a great idea in Hong Kong. Or on further reflection, neither are such great ideas full stop. But it was definitely fun at the time.

    Did these "friends" remain "friends"?

You have clearly never been a young boy growing up in the countryside

It's pretty much a standard behavioural phase right next to building treehouses, playing with petrol and (unfortunately) random cruelty to small defenceless animals.

Still, it beats wandering around the streets of London with knives or happy slapping people!
