I like the idea from virago in principle but to each its own. Besides you can certainly follow both paths.
No, not going to get off my high horse.
Though I don't go and dig wells I have put through school 4 kids in china that couldn't afford school fees. It's about 5k per child a year. Two children a year for 7 years. This year I haven't done it. Not much really but something.
If you choose to turn away then that's your choice but I feel I should at least give you a guilt trip about it!

Fair enough, I guess if trying to send the purchasers of expensive watches on a guilt trip was your intention and undoubtedly you have chosen a commendable cause for your "spare" (for lack of a better term given I have no idea of your financial situation) cash I just had no idea why you bothered with your post on this particular thread. Apologies but it just came across to me as weird that somebody would bother going onto a thread about expensive watches just to post something about digging wells in Africa.
I still wouldn't buy a Rolex in HK (or anywhere in Asia ex Japan). You do know of articles (for example on the SCMP) of HK shops selling fakes for real prices? Some shops specialise in ripping off Chinese tourists. Not saying that all do that, but I would suggest doing a web search of the shop you plan to buy the watch.
Yes, you are right. I have a bit of a hate for expensive luxury items which cost 5% of the original price and a marketing ploy, especially watches and hand bags which are the biggest con in the 20th century.
Having lived on the mainland for a few years I saw plenty of people showing off their expensive useless items to gain prestige and status.
