Let me take this one step back:

Will leaving the home well-ventilated (i.e. windows open) help in preventing mould growth? I'm guessing the problem starts with having warm and humid still air.

    Let me know. Thanks!
We find the opposite. Closed windows are better. The outside air is VERY humid, so once you get the water out of it, you don't want more wet air coming in!
    THexpat and bryant.english like this.

I do agree with MovingIn07. When I moved to HK in the mid of June, I kept the window opened. The result was the whole floor was wet. Three or four days later my bedroom's ceiling got mold. After that I try not to open the window, it is worked, no more mold. However, I still prefer to open the window to get more fresh air. That why I think I need to have a dehumidifier to turn on it when I leave my room for work.

Windows open or closed won't make a huge amount of difference, but the area or building you live in might.

I've lived in some flats that never had mould problems, and others where it was definitely necessary to run an AC or dehumidifier for parts of the year.

Jusco and Apita often have good deals on the Japanese brands. I saw a few Mitsubishi ones there last week at Apita if you are still looking.

Check the various classifieds forums- dehumidifiers appear all the time.
