why ebay.com and Amazon.com is not in Hong kong.
Ebay is allover the world and doing well, why it is missing in Hong Kong ?

ebay: most hkers are not fond of buying anything used?
amazon: this is a city of 7 million people... it would be like a separate amazon for NYC, one for LA, one for Florida.... not very feasible is it...

People here use Cantonese secondhand sites instead of Ebay.
Ebay does exist: eBay - 從MP3ã€é›»è…¦ã€æ‰‹æ© ã€æ•¸ç¢¼ç›¸æ©Ÿã€æ”¶è —å“ã€ç”·è£ã€å¥³è£ ,到å¤è‘£ã€å¯µç‰©ç ¨å“ï¼Œä½ çš„å¿ƒæ°´ç‰©å “ï¼Œç›¡åœ¨eBayï¼ but in HK is mostly used for crap from China. I noticed a lot of Hong Kongers use Yahoo to sell stuff. Anyway, I use EBAY USA and UK all the time. I never buy used stuff, but sometimes buy rare and hard to find stuff. You will find a lot of HK'ers put stuff for sale on the US or UK ebay sites.
HK locals tend to use Yahoo auction for new stuff and forum boards for used stuff.
yahoo auction is also popular in taiwan and japan, the fees are far cheaper ( ebay is only used to sell to the west, take advantage of hk cheap postal cost), ie, selling HK$100 on ebay incurres a charge around HK$11 ( BTW, almost same rate as christies and sotherby rate), while yahoo auction is only at HK$1
most of yahoo things are second hand, some are brand new and sometimes signifcantly cheaper than stores.
Yahoo auctions and Taobao are doing ok here.
As for Amazon, one of the important things to remember is that Amazon is really a logistics company as much as an e-commerce facility. A massive network of warehouses with advanced technology (even robots running products around). With space at such a premium here, getting an 'Amazon-style' warehouse built would involve a considerable outlay of funds, perhaps more than they could recoup from the market size here.
It comes down to a few things:
- Small local market, as many have said there are only 7 million people in HK. But saying that, Singapore and other countries of comparable size do have a thriving online commerce market. For some reason HK people prefer to use other forums.
- Massive only classified market where the likes of DC Fever do better.
- Well established yahoo auctions, basically dominates compared to ebay.com.hk.
- The success of Taobao.
You can get people to ship goods from amazon.com / co.uk and ebay, but obviously you are paying for shipping.
Why would you waste your time with auction sites ?
The local used scene especially specialist hifi / video sites are absolutely kick arse! I recently purchased a mint condition 2 year old, Klipsch Reference centre channel speaker for 25% of its new price lol. I won't mention the site that I primarily use as it is currently a great place to find bargains, promoting it will only increase the prices like expats usually do when they promote a particular apartment complex/service for example, it just ends up costing everybody a lot more in the end. Sorry...
Google around and you will eventually find HK websites that are dedicated to new and used, high end hifi/video gear, and contrary to what has been said, Hongkies love to buy second hand high end hifi gear, be it Martin Logan speakers, McIntosh, Sunfire subwoofers or AV receivers, Quick Silver mono blocks, Krell power amps, Linn Audio etc etc etc they turn over lots of used gear, quite regularly.
Of course, these sites are navigated in Traditional Chinese,so google translate sort of works well enough to get the gist of what's advertised, most advertisers inc photos, price and model number in English.Easy to work out...
Sorry, but that is totally lame. You say, you guys are crap wasting your time trying to use x and y site, but I know about this amazing site but refuse to tell you the name about.
Are you just trying to sound cool, cause you are "in" with the local crowd?
If you are not going to disclose and share, why do you bother even posting?
