I've sent an email to the IQAir people with my requirement, let see if they are able to answer within today. If not Fortress it is.

I am also going to buy some heavy duty brush draught excluders for under the door. I've seen them in Mong Kok for $300 each in a specialist shop, steep price for something that costs usually a few Euros back home and online. I guess I don't have a choice except paying up or masking tape!

PS: Saw Built-In Pro has the Sharp filter for $1000 cheaper than Fortress. I bought my kitchen hood exhaust fan from them and gas cooker top.

The two Philips models are also around $500 cheaper/each.

I ended up buying a cheaper Philips model that they don't have in their brochure. It comes with only 2 filters (3 if you count the mesh at the front) including carbon. Good enough for 55sq m and around $1800 (wife bought it for me).

IQAir's reply came a bit too late, but I may look into it later when I need something bigger/more solid. But what put me off: wall mount brackets cost HKD3,000 - HKD5,000/unit. WTF? This is for a HK made one, the original costs even more. I am sure if you have one made in one of these shops in Mong Kok that do air con wall mount brackets it costs less than $1000.

The unit itself (IQAir HealthPro 250) is HKD13,900 and a quick check online shows it's $849 in the States or GBP 899 in the UK and Euro 1,189 in Germany. China is RMB 14,980. Seems not only us in HK pay the premium and only comparing to the US price is not really fair. HK includes 5 years warranty and on-site service, so in my opinion alright for what you get and if it's for a commercial operation. Germany's equivalent of Consumer Reports in the US, gave it VERY GOOD for particle filtering, GOOD for gas and odors and GOOD overall. Not sure how it compared to others, that was already in 1998. I probably need to check the price on filters before I go ahead. And not sure how it would compare to the around $3k to $4k units from Sharp and Philips. Probably same anyway.

Found this article and I am posting it here for reference. The "Asian Invasion" section is probably the most interesting for us:

Seems the dry Sharp units are the way to go.

The A80U model is around $3000 in HK.

I hate it if there are too many products to chose from :/

Does anybody know where I could buy cut-to-fit filters for air conditioners?

    Something like this:
    3M Filtrete Air Conditioner Filter,15-Inch by 24-Inch (9808-12) - Amazon.com
