Heard good things about them but never used one as they tend to be on the small side.
Off memory they consume a large amount of energy but I can't remember the figures. More than a dehumidifier, but they probably work faster.
Another alternative is to vertically stack a dryer over a washer. There are fairly standard floor mounted brackets that allow you do do this.

I might add, my last washing machine was also a Philco combo. I had that for 4.5 years and then sold it (it was working fine, just wanted a bigger washer with faster spin speed). I never once used the dryer in the years that I owned it.
