    Vietnamese cooking ingredients

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post! I have been living in Hong Kong now for 3 weeks and have adapted quickly to the lifestyle having holidaying here for the past 27 years of my life. One of the skills I am trying to expand are my cooking skills and having been brought up in a household of Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine am keen to find out where the nearest place is to buy the Vietnamese herbs and ingredients.

Can anyone help me? I am based on Kowloon side and whilst there's a Wellcome and an International none of them really cater for the traditional Vietnamese dish!

    Thanks in advance!

There are a few shops outside Wan Chai market that sells Thai food ingredients. I'm not sure what is Vietnamese cooking ingredients but I think they are similar. You can try your luck there. http://www.12hk.com/area/WanChai/Wan...etMarket.shtml

Many of the Indonesian shops have Vietnamese ingredients. Around Sham Shui Po (in the market, second level) there is an Indo shop selling Indo/Thai/Viet ingredients.

A very good place is Kowloon City. South Wall Rd. has several (10?) small shops with Thai stuff. Another good place is a small spice shop in Nga Tsing Long Rd., opposite the wet market, they have many dry spices. They even have serundeng, otherwise really hard to find in HK (needed for Beef Rendang).

Not sure about Vietnam stuff, Thailand is close though.

You may get better help if you elaborate a little what 'them' is.

I've found the wet market in quarry bay (as well as wet market in Wanchai sometimes) has some thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian fresh ingredients. If you're looking for dried herbs then an online retailer is your best bet (provided you don't want to go to the ripoff brands). I buy my ethnic spices from regencyspices.hk. Some international online shops would also have whatever you're looking for, but these guys are local so the delivery is much faster and free.
