    Smoke detctor, fire blankets, etc.

    Hi,

It's about time I equipped our flat with some smoke detectors and other fire safety equipment (there is sometimes a light burning smell coming from near a light fixture, but nothing visable/easy to fix!). Reading old threads, I saw a reference to this fire safety shop "Index" in Wan Chai: http://www.fire.hk/, which seems like a reliable place nearby to get these things.
Does anyone know how their prices are, though? Are they unreasonable high? I won't be going back to the states anytime soon for these things and I'm not particularly keen to go to Mong Kok or Sham Shui Po. Please let me know, though, if there are any other shops that might have good prices and reliable equipment.

I read about that, along with the water slide fire escapes concept (which I'm now googling).

No, thankfully, I haven't ever noticed anyone doing this. There are only 3 flats per floor, so this limits the action happening in the stairwell, and we're very near the top.

Wing On has fire extinguishers and fire blankets. Well at least one of each. Around $300-400 (buying online saves a couple of $$).

Is someone who reads geoexpats an architect and/or entrepreneurer? If so, could you please please develop water slide fire escapes for Hong Kong? Inflatable ones would be particularly awesome. (If they're good enough for airplane safety, aren't they for buildings?)

That shop in Wan Chai is reliable. We bought first aid kits there and got them to install the emergency lighting in our Centre which passed the fire service inspection.

Citi store sell fire extinguishers for less than $200, small home version type. I was thinking of getting one to put in my car just in case something happens in the middle of the road, i dont think I can pee long enough to put out an engine fire

The shop in Wanchai has all the top brands from USA and Europe as well as cheaper alternatives from Asia (Japan, Taiwan) followed by the cheapest brands from China.

The selection is extensive. Go and see.

I probably posted in one of the earlier threads that the OP mentions.

The Wanchai store is fine. Prices were reasonable when I bought my alarms (Kidde, I believe).

On people's recommendation here in the forums, checked out this Safety Fire Fighting Equipment shop in Wanchai and was not disappointed!

The website is really informative and surprisingly extensive in English. And when we visited the shop, we talked to Anthony who was extremely friendly and informative.

If you're only buying for the home (ie, not a large volume), the price difference to get the American-made product is not significant. We opted for a Kidde fire extinguisher and smoke alarm.

We were in and out of the shop quickly, no muss, no fuss. Great recommendation!
