Household Income - Local Online Stores

I just registered with "HK TV mall". They ask for household income, and don't give an option not to say. It always makes me cringe when HK stores ask this kind of info (I came across it before, but can't remember where, possibly the other supermarkets). I can't think of any other places where this is asked, and I wouldn't dare to ask this if I'd run my own online store...

So, what do you think of this practice? What am I missing?

Just above "Gender" it states "The following items are optional". What am I missing?

I normally just give it too. I figure they either use it internally to see the breakdown of their shoppers - and target their stock selection based on that... or they use it to refine the adverts/promotions offered to their clients - which is also fine for me.

I'm prefer to get promotions that may be more germane to me than non-targeted promotions.
