    Skyler/Ecosa/Koala 'Internet mattresses'?

I've been hearing ads on podcasts for a while for Casper mattresses in the US, but obviously it's not really a sensible thing to ship like that - now there seem to be (at least) 3 companies in HK with the same business model. 2 of them (Koala and Ecosa) are open about being based in, and shipping from, Australia, while Skyler are claiming, at least, to be local. They all claim to be cheaper than 'the big boys' partly because they bypass showrooms and salesmen and sell online, except 2 of them have showrooms - one in MK, one around Aberdeen.

Anyone tried any of their products? Reviews, reports, opinions?

@vmlinuz - I posted this on another thread last week.

These guys will be happy to give you a quote for mattresses from the US. Have photos of a number of them along with larger furniture boxes etc, on their facebook page.

I want to ask the same question. I am searching for a new mattress, preferrable has two softness and can be flipped for our guest room. There are so many internet mattresses which seems using identical business model, Ecosa, Koala, Skyler, Noa, you name it. Although their design seems a bit different, but I just wonder how's their quality different from each other.

Looking for a spare mattress, I checked out their showroom a couple months back and it's worth mentioning that they were in the process of changing over their inventory to a new model. They happened to have both when I visited.

The old model was multiple layers glued into a whole, and from my perspective was soft enough that most Westerners would find it reasonable, especially side sleepers.

The model which was replacing it was no longer all glued together, the top two layers could be flipped around to adjust firmness. It had been configured into it's less firm configuration. Pretty sure it'd been changed for the local market as I found it much more typical of the Asian mattress experience- not brick hard, but too hard for side sleeping. I was told that different markets have different foam compositions, so even if you find good online reviews, they may not be relevant to what you can get in Hong Kong.

The long return policies are a great change from the usual store model though, so it's a pretty low risk buying route.

An update to this thread. I bought one of these mattress-in-a-box things to use as a spare, from Noa (which uses a combination of springs and foam unlike most other brands). It is exceptionally good for the price. For me it's terrifically comfortable, which means it's probably slightly too soft for the preferences of the local market. It smelled funny (the expected chemical smell) for about three days, after that it's been fine.

It's bloody heavy, which is always a good sign in a mattress- lots of decent quality materials. However, they refuse to give any specifications on foam densities or thicknesses. They'll give coil counts and gauges (which is only a semi useful quality indicator but seemed okay). I did contact a couple of other companies (Ecosa, Skyler) and their foam densities seemed fine.

The three obvious cost cutting measures I could identify were:

It arrived squashed and rolled up in a box, which saves on logistics. No big deal.

The shell layers are extremely no-frills. The separate layers are held together by something resembling a giant pocket of mesh material, and over the top of this is a zippered removable cover. Traditional mattress brands will have a much fancier, non-removable shell. I'd say the removable cover approach is better (you can wash it).

The mattress uses the same type of pocket coil spring all over, where other high end mattresses will use stiffer springs at the edges to provide more support. The differential spring design is useful when you sit on the edge of a bed- with the Noa the edges just collapse.

The main issue with foam mattresses is the heat build up. There are some good reviews on YouTube. I read some reviews of Skylar about them being hot. It seems one can wake up h
Hot and sweaty when sleeping on foam.

There are more 'cool' mattresses now in the US, among them one called Purple and one called Cocoon ( made by Sealy). The Sealy web site in HK does not mention Cocoon but hopefully it will make it across the pacific soon.

If anyone knows where to buy these 2 brands in HK, please let us know.

Is it really an 'issue', or is it down to individual metabolism? Certainly by my standards, most people in HK have ridiculously cold metabolisms e.g. they wear jackets in winter. And foam mattresses seem to be extremely popular here.

Have you checked the website of the first one? It should be easily apparent whether you can get them in HK or not.

For Sealy I would not hold my breath- HK product selections tend to be tiny. You could always ask at https://www.sealy.com.hk/store-locator/
