Our local supermarkets in Sweden had both regular and self-service checkouts... To deter thieves, they would randomly check your bags... I would say you had a 10% chance, roughly speaking...

Anyway, I guess someone has done the math and I'm sure any losses are calculated in.

Next to my place in Tokyo, a new LIFE supermarket just opened. They have a 'hybrid' system which confused the hell out of me (typical Japan does everything differently) but actually is not bad. They still have humans that scan the groceries for you, but they don't bag them and they don't collect the payment. You are directed to a terminal at the end of the checkout area to make the payment.

Where it gets very 'Japanese' (confusing) is they have different colours for the fucking baskets, you walk in and take a yellow one and do your shopping in the yellow one, then the cashier transfers your shit into a brown one when you pay, and the different colours are how they tell if your items have been scanned or not (but I'm not entirely sure why this is important). I love going in there and picking up a brown one from the exit area instead of a yellow one to confuse the cashiers and other shoppers and my wife always complains how childish I am

Perhaps you're not mature enough? Just joking.

Seriously though, we were using it 10 years ago and loved it... it wasn't perfect, but it sure beat queuing. I remember mentioning to my wife that it would still be quicker to go through the self service counters even if you knew you had items that would cause you to need human help... aka, you'd be straight to the front of the queue.

I don't press the 'door close' buttons in lifts! Try that for a laugh and stern looks from the wife!

I think a lot of that may be that you're expecting a system that can replace a human cashier, which I don't think the technology is there yet.

I see the auto check out as a limited functionality system whose main advantage is to specialize in processing the simpler transaction, so the cashiers are free to tackle the more complicated cases . So if you're not buying alcohol, not getting marked down items, the auto check out works. If human intervention is required, better to just use the cashier instead.

I supposed it's a learning process for the customer as well to figure out which item is more convenient with auto check outs, and which is best handled by human cashier. Once you get it down it's not nearly as complicated.

This was Australia in the "old days". However, the cashier and packer were employed by the supermarket, not an outside helper or maid. In Singapore, I have stood behind the helper buying the groceries, and they expect the cashier to pack the groceries, not themselves...like reversing roles...I don't have a helper ( except PT when my neighbour lends me hers, for whom it is extra money for her ( the helper ) . But I am used to unloading my own basket or trolley, unlike many...

Personally, I dislike the self service checkouts as the space to unload and scan then pack is so much smaller than a cashier doing it, that I prefer the luxury of a cashier than propping up my basket on a small space, scanning then after multiple recyclable bags later, where do I put them when I pay??? The floor maybe but then again, people are sidling past and kick the bloody bags....or the granny trolley.

Oh, the Ikea self checkout was faster and this is despite having to move to an actual cash when the total was over $1000 (no cash accepted) and the CC couldn't be tapped...

I see this as a downgrade in service quality.
Every decent supermarket should have a cashier and a packer per staffed checkout and the line flows
I can go through a Hypermarket Pick N Pay in Joburg twice as fast as here
The local supermarkets here are greedy grabbing thieves
Now they want you to pay the same price and serve and pack yourself – i.e. you work for them and then pay them
Some time back the head buyer for PNS was a Japanese lady married to a Brit. They were members of our rugby club. I brought back some Casino Brie and Camembert from RSA and soon enough she had the whole Casino range on the PNS shelves. Except the cheeses that included import shipping, inland transport, duties and 14% sales tax in RSA and sold for HKD 18, was on the Park N Theft shelves for HKD 45.
Shrinkage will increase and they will need more security staff and more work for the police
Anyone who wants home delivery should have a separate queue and have the form completed before joining a queue.

This is what will happen here too:

I'm waiting for Amazon/Wholefood system with cameras/computers that know what I took from the shelf, I just put it in my bag and walk out. What a dream..
