I think the only moral thing to do is adopt a fan, make sure you have nets on all your windows and remember to use sanitiser

I respectfully disagree- get a new one. You don't know where a secondhand one has been, and if it was in the wrong household before, you could get Covid or the Cooties.

That might help with covid, but it won't stop the cooties.

You need a Xiaomi fan like the 1X that you can control with your phone/voice and has a natural breeze-simulating algorithm. Or spend another $50 and get the 2 that has 7+5 airfoil blades that provide a three-dimensional breeze. Or splurge on the 2 Pro to go wireless, providing up to 18 hours of breeze on a single charge!

I don't like my Xiaomi fan. It's very quiet and if the room itself is quiet the coil whine from the AC transformer is quite annoying. I guess the battery one won't have this problem.

That fan winding post is by me, a result of my husband's fascination with buying secondhand stuff off Carousell. This particular one was a secondhand SMC ceiling fan he got for a "good" deal. He was able to get it fixed somewhere in Sham Shui Po. Took 2-3 days of walking around in SSP with his non-existent Cantonese to finally find someone who agreed to do it for him.

@heartandhymn - if you can get the shop's info from your husband, can you please update that thread so we can point ekim to that thread if and when they need to rewind their fan? Thanks!

This is the best thread I have read for quite some time. I love it.

The only other times I have encountered the idea of hand-winding copper coils has been when obsessive audio nuts are customising transformers.

We need more threads like this.

Very common in places like India. Why waste a perfectly good fan when you can rewire/wind the motor? You just don't throw things away because they stopped working - unless its a human in which case there is usually very little you can do after they've died, from what I've heard.
