I can't afford City Super so wouldn't know. If a place has good and FRIENDLY service then it's probably because you're dealing with Filipinos or other SEA's as frontline staff.

They sell more than groceries. Had an issue with a HK-edition Moleskine notebook several years ago. Was priced wrong on the shelf, apparently, but the lady at the counter insisted I pay the 'correct' price. Got a prompt reply by e-mail from CitySuper when I questioned what happened and they said of course I'd only have to pay the marked price. They gave me the difference back in store credit.

Maybe my standards are too high, but I would say this is poor customer service.

Firstly they made the error, causing you hassle.

Then you had to expend further energy on contacing theml, and the only refunded the difference, and in store credit too. The absolute minimum would have been a refund of the difference to the credit card or in cash. Great customer service would be refunding the entire purchase purchase to apologise for the hassle you encountered due to their errors!

In HK the service back then was otherwise way worse than that! I believe I had the option of a cash refund. It's been a while. I did get a free notebook from Moleskine in HK because of the situation though. I don't expect too much from low-level local sales clerks, so I'm not surprised they made me pay the 'correct' price initially.

Oh, the original marked price was below list price, so it was a good deal.

Ok, I will throw in my nomination.. My pharmacy in Kennedy Town. Always recommends generics - my meds cost had been dropping every year. Allows me to walk in with my dog. Helps me find what I want and tells me that the meds I am asked for will give me cancer...

I think "good service" should be the norm in any developed mature economy at any price level. In HK its higher tier developed country prices with the shittiest service. No wonder I dont bother shopping in HK and I'd rather order on Amazon and be done with it. Sometimes there can even be savings found if I buy a super cheap low season ticket to London and go shopping for 3 days and come back! The shopping scene is just that lame in hk.

Can we add rude fellow shoppers to this? On at least a weekly basis, some older local jumps ahead of her in the checkout queue and the cashier sees it and does nothing. Wife hates to cause scenes, so just waits the extra few minutes.

I don't think 'corporate' happiness that you get thrust at you in some societies is a 'good' service. Fast, efficient and unnoticeable is the best kind of service.

My local cafe. Sit down, Nod from the waitstaff, 2 mins later my usual dropped on my table with the chit. I consume whilst reading / emailing. On exit take the chit to the till. Pay and leave.

Not a single smile, chat, check how I am etc. I would consider the service as excellent given the simplicity of the offering. Consistently efficient.

Apart from the same guy that’s cut my hair for the last 11 years bar one disastrous episode I honestly cannot remember one occasion where I’ve walked out of a shop with any degree of satisfaction.

I am sure there must have been instances but these are trumped by the places where you go in, tell them you’re just looking and then they continue to either try to speak to you or stand feet away which almost always has me heading for the exit.

Just remembered I would say PCCW customer service centre Sheung Wan (formerly Wan Chai) have actually been surprisingly good. You need to go in there with a clear and not unreasonable goal. Saves all the futility of trying it in one of their shops or worse still over the phone.

In France and Slovenia grannies do not have to queue at the supermarket and public transport so I thought when HK implemented those priority seats, that it became common courtesy
