Sending food gifts from overseas to Hong Kong

    Hey everyone,

I am considering ordering a Christmas hamper from the UK and sending some to several close friends in Hong Kong.

Wondering if anyone has sent food items from overseas into Hong Kong before. Hong Kong is much less strict than most other jurisdictions but just worried about any pitfalls, given the hamper cost plus shipping cost is not inexpensive.

I am thinking I probably need to avoid meat and dairy products just to be safe, and stick with bakery / candy products.

Anything I should be careful about?

Proceesed meat/fish and diary (i.e. cheese) is fine I think. Raw meat/fish/milk is not. Also any alcohol over 30% by volume would be subject to customs duties.

From what I've heard your big problem will be getting it out of the UK, not getting it into HK

Might as well buy it domestically e.g feather and bone or rosewood

I have brought in raw meat and all sorts of groceries dozens of times and found that they don't really care about it. Airline crew carry cooler bags in plain sight through the crew customs channel scanner and they never bat an eye.

Dunno if sending packages would be different though.

I remember a limit of 1 litre for alcohol > 30%. Did it change?

A friend brought in a roast pig and got pulled over by customs. Pig was fine but got done for the 200 cigarettes.

That's in accompanied baggage, not in unaccompanied packages.

That's a bit iffy - there were reports recently of people being arrested for doing that at the Shenzhen border.

Maybe they are more strict up there than at the airport.
