High street prescription glasses or optometrist?

So I went to polyvision to get a comprehensive eye examination but I didn't want to buy any of their glasses. If I buy glasses from the high street, should I use my new prescription or the one I get from the store I'm buying glasses from?

Most stores will insist on a sanity check - to avoid a faulty prescription which you will then come back to them, to complain about the glasses.

Less so for reading glasses .. more so for progressives

Reading glasses: buy in bulk from Amazon. My favorites are 5 for 15 usd, have a pair...everywhere. Break some, get another set.

Have spent real money on glasses and...they have lasted not even as long as the el-cheapo version.

There are also online stores where you can send a prescription if you're willing to take a chance and...Shenzhen.

However, if it's complicated or you want a technician to really adjust the fit, etc. then, not so much.

it's a non problem. Most stores won't give you the prescription unless you buy. If you have a prescription already, you hold all the cards. The new store you want to buy glasses from will probably give you a free test again if you want it, if not you already have your prescription....

As Zelensky says, if you are clearly interesting in buying then most shops won't charge you for a quick simple test to confirm that the prescription you hold is accurate.

And I agree that PolyVision is a very expensive place to buy glasses - I only ever go there for the ~$5-600 comprehensive eye exam (which I find to be good), and resist the sales pitch afterwards.

I just bought recently from Zenni optical online, following some older advice here. Let's see how those work.
I also made some cheap ones in New Fei Optical in MongKok, those ones seem perfectly fine, and they were rather cheap. I used this measurement to order the ones from Zenni with all extras.

I recently bought Tag Heuer, progressive glasses (frame is free) from Dongmen glasses city (2/F), Shenzhen for 1200RMB. So far the quality is good

I've been going to Polyvision since it was established 20 years ago. From my experience, the prescription they give you is more reliable than what you'll get from the chain stores. Moreover, I have always found the chain stores to be familiar with Polyvision and happy to accept a fresh prescription from them. I have not had a chain store request to recheck the prescription themselves. These days, I quite like the prices, offerings and service at Zoff.

Optical 88 for sure insists on doing a sanity check atleast for me with progressives.

Will have to check out Zoff.
