In ceiling speakers / outdoor speakers

Anyone know where I can get some of these?

Found a US maker but their HK distributor says they are not really suitable for HK as the speakers are 8" wide - not really appropriate for concrete ceilings.

    Thanks!

In short, don't bother - unless you are making flight announcement or are playing elevator music, they generally sound horrible.

    Ummm not true at all...

Like anything in this world, you get what you pay for, the more you pay, the higher the performance...

In my opinion Klipsch, KEF and Paradigm manufacture some excellent high end sounding in wall/ceiling speakers, but it will largely depend on how much money you are willing to spend, as all 3 of these brands are in a more expensive segment of the niche.
But they do work especially well

I am not sure how many pairs of speakers are going to be used in your application, if its just going to be used for a Home Cinema or if they are going to be used via an a/v distribution system, say with 3 or 4 pairs of speakers, which will also require the inclusion of ( well ventilated ) impedence matching transformer/s, or you'll fry your main amp....

And a little advice, all in wall and in ceiling speakers are designed with a cavity space in mind, none of them are designed for solid concrete walls.

You will need to make some sort of cavity space behind the speaker, that you can countersink/flush mount it to or you are going to have fun digging out walls and ceilings which may not be thick enough, walls are generally 225mm thick in Hong Kong....

Ok, we can agree to disagree on this one.

Agree with that - to a certain degree that is (before one gets into the 'esoteric' sphere, where the price-performance relationship breaks down very quickly ).

Ok, we are talking mainstream, not esoterics - very sensible. All perfectly decent manufacturers with good products. However, at any price point the box-speakers will be superior for sound reproduction to the in-wall/ceiling speakers at the same price.

Very true - and was part of the (unstated) reasoning behind my statement above: While in-wall/ceiling speakers are inherently acoustically inferior to equivalent box ones, the extent of the disadvantage is in part determined by the installation. Cavity space and other measures help - but are not always realistic in Hong Kong.

Thank you for the red dots, via the person who said I know nothing about speakers .

The Original Poster specifically asked where to buy Inwall, inceiling speakers, I don't remember seeing this thread being a debate about which speaker design worked best, obviously these speakers have their limitations, but not all sound bad either, if you want to architecturally hide speakers within the application....

    Anyway, its all good...

If you are going to red dot, atleast red dot fairly...

Well I found it very useful so a green dot from me.

I have just rewired my bathroom and seeing as the conduit was all in place I put in some speaker cable.

The idea is I could then pipe some music or radio in there given that it took all of 5 minutes to get cable in.

I will need to make a cavity to get a speaker in there so I was hoping for a speaker that was as shallow as possible. Quality is really not an issue as this is in the bathroom. I was also thinking of playing both channels through the one speaker - again quality is not a concern here.

I did a bit of googling and found loads of in wall / in ceiling speakers in the US however almost all the companies I contacted did not ship overseas.

Some had HK agents but the smallest in ceiling speakers I have found are 8 inches deep - too deep for me.

Having read up a bit I found out that in ceiling speakers are not uncommon in a lot of houses and the sound quality is fine. Yes they do cost more than the equivalent box speakers but they are also a more specialised product so no surprise there.
