Sure enough, we received an SMS reminder (in Chinese, which neither of us can read) saying that if we don't cancel our free trial by tomorrow, our 12 month plan would begin.

Luckily I was able to cancel the subscription, I think it went through properly. It better have.

PCCW has great internet connection and speed, but it is serisouly the most dishonest, fucked up, disgusting company I have ever dealt with in my life. I hear many nightmare stories about Comcast in USA, and Rogers in Canada, but none of them hold a candle to the thieves at PCCW.

I had to physically escort one of their salesmen out of our apartment, after he was trying to convince my wife to sign a paper confirming that he "checked" our NowTV service, and that it was OK. Turns out he was trying to trick her into signing a new 18 month contract after ours had just expired.

And then there was the PCCW mobile salesman who signed her onto a new 12 month contract, which she didn't mind doing in exchange for the incentive they offered. They ended up signing her to a contract for both our phone numbers, without saying. What a nightmare it was, dealing with collection agents as we changed carriers for the other number, not knowing it was under a contract. They said that they had a recording showing that she agreed to the contract, but would not play it back for us.

What a sick, disgusting, fucked up company. They can all go to fucking hell.
Just a quick update to this story - it turns out that we had free trials to media.now.com.hk and moov.now.com.hk. I saw "moov" listed, but when I went to cancel it online, I was brought to a page with just one line of Chinese.. It was in flash, so it couldn't be translated. And there was no indication that I could see that represented a monthly subscription of any sort, so I couldn't figure out how to cancel it.

We got our first bill, and it had a $48 charge for MOOV on it. I was fucking pissed.

I emailed them, and basically wrote what I wrote here, and said that if they don't cancel and refund, that I would be bringing it up to the OFTA. And that I would pay my internet bill, but not the $48 charge.

Amazingly, they said that since there is no usage record that they would cancel the service and refund the amount. They even fucking apologized. WOW!

I wonder if they are starting to realize that their employees are basically scamming their customers?

Eh? Who is "they" in this sentence? You really think individual PCCW employees would be systematically adding unrequested service items on to the bills of customers if it wasn't company policy? Why would they do that? There's nothing in it for the individuals.

Same as the minibond story, same as subprime mortgages, same as credit card bills.....people have a huge tendency to sign stuff without really properly understanding what they sign....now I agree it is a nasty selling technique anyway.

the world is full of tricksters and con artists trying to make a quick buck.

just yesterday, i was looking at bedside tables, and on display was 1 small and 1 large. the small one was a bit too small and the large one was a bit too large (even tho i could fit both it wudn't look as good) so i asked if there was a medium one since i knew there was a whole set of them. the sales lady said that there was a medium one, but it would have to be specially made, and i would have to wait 6 weeks. so i decided to get the bigger one. which she said would be delivered next week.

now this shop is on the way to work so i pass by every day. and this morning as i was walking past, i saw the whole set of 4 tables on display (smallest, small, medium and large)!!! i kinda feel like walking into the shop and then pretending to be suprised that they have the whole set there cos she told me to my face that i would have to wait 6 weeks for it to be made...

maybe the agents dont understand English. And they think you would like the Moov thing for only $45 a month.

It should be clear that "they" refers to PCCW. With the assumption that their employees who are doing these tricks are working on commission. Otherwise there would be no reason at all for pursue customers as strongly as they do. If they were just making $10 an hour, they'd be sitting around waiting for people to come to them with service requests. Not pretending to "check your service" to trick you into signing a contract, and forcing $90 of monthly "added services" to your account.

"They" normally refers to people. PCCW is a company. Who specifically do you have in mind? Alex Arena (CEO), Richard Li (Chairman) or someone else?

What the fuck difference does it make? It's a forum, take your semantic bullshit elsewhere.
