Canon Powershot D10 or Olympus Tough 8000?

I'm looking for a waterproof, shockproof, idiot-proof digital camera. Both of the above seem to fit the bill - and price.com.hk has them at the same price ....(HKD 2,300)

Views anyone? I've had a powershot before and love it, but the "tap control" on the olympus that lets you use the controls with gloves might just be the edge (not to mention it's smaller)....

And where to buy? Can I buy on price.com.hk? I cannot find a button for English, which is abit of a barrier ... But Fortress price is MUCH higher than this, so not sure where to get the price.com.hk price!

Based on personal experience and preference, I would definitely go with Canon over Olympus. Although it's true that Olympus has been making waterproof compacts for significantly longer, their models were not without problems and I have personally had one tough model ruined by taking in water in less than 0.5meters of depth. Additionally, the image quality of Olympus cameras have always left me with much to be desired.....

Here are the side by side comparisons of the models in questions:

As you can see from the conclusions, Olympus Tough came in on the bottom of most of the categories, while the Canon excelled throughout the tests.

Looking at the side by side categories, here are the purely technical reasons why I would take Canon over Olympus:

    1. SD card storage vs. XD Card / mini SD, SD cards are cheaper, faster and more reliable in my opinion than XD. I had several XD card fail on me through the years and never had a problem with SD apart from physical damage.

    2. Canon has a higher ISO sensitivity (may be handy underwater or in low light)

    3. Canon has a better lens with f2.8 minimum aperture (although it is slightly less wide than Olympus).

    3. Canon has a much slower minimum shutter speed (great for night / low light shots) and much faster maximum shutter speed (useful for action shots)

    4. 30fps for movie modes vs. 15fps.

To be honest, I don't even think it's much of a contest.

I would look at Broadway (my favorite one is in Elements Mall in Kowloon). You can bargain with them an easily knock down 5 to 10% off originally quoted price. You can and should also bargain at Fortress, but I find them to be much more of a pain.

Did you try this place, which is listed on Price.hk?

Great - thanks for this - very helpful indeed. So far I have been researching online only (it was pouring outside today!) so I might look in real shops tomorrow. I want to see a D10 in real life before making a decision - the bulk of it is a concern, to be honest - but I think the links you provided highlight that the olympus is not the best alternative, the panasonic lumix looks actually to be much closer to what I want .... which is something to use hiking, skiiing, travelling and not worry about rain, snow, the odd river or puddle etc!

I played with all 3 models and have to say Panasonic is my favorite. Canon is way too bulky for everyday use, but if you need it for diving, the 10 meter depth would come in handy. All around use camera with occasional snorkeling would definitely be Panasonic for me. But it's a few hundred HKD more than either Olympus or Canon.
