    wet markets?

Hi, lots of questions on wet markets. hoping someone can help:

Wondering if anyone could point me out to wet markets within a half hour train ride of Central?

Besides the Graham Street one (which is rather pricey, o.O ) I know there's a Wan Chai one (where exactly?), one at Wong Dai Sin (close to the MTR?), anyone could recommend others where the produce is fresh and prices are good, or are these two my best options? I was told there's a nice one at Hung Hom (?)

    Opening hours?

I'm looking to get vegetables and seafood basically, perhaps restock once a week on weekends - the Wellcome and PnS close to me don't seem to stock much fresh seafood - they're all the chilled and frozen kind. I kind of prefer my seafood still swimming first, or at least, whole.

Is bargaining required in these markets as well, or it doesn't matter?

And do I bring my own bags too, even for the items like meat/fish?

    thanks..

virtually every area in HK has a wet market, it's how (i would guess) 90% of the population does it's shopping.

no bargaining (that i've ever noticed).
    they supply bags.

just ask the local neighbours where the market is. there is really no need to 'travel' to one.

I normally go to one in MK, behind Langham Hotel. They have great choice and it can get busy with the locals and the maids. They are quite cheap as well. Dont forget to ask for free spring onions if you buying from a veg stall which i always forget! I think they close around 7pm

The tiny PnS near us sells fresh (as in still swimming) fish - and the tanks stink!

Check out the wet market in North Point. It's right at the end of the North Point tramline. The first part (get off at the corner after it turns off King's Road) has fruit and veggies (and clothes, etc.). The second part (you have to walk under the flyover at the end of the street) has animal stuff.

Haven't been there in a while but it's a pretty decent one. With a Novotel in the middle of it for some reason.

On a map, it's Chun Yeung Street, leading onto Marble Street.

1/2 hour on the train will take you to most of the markets on the island.

Closest one would be WanChai, but its a bit far from the MTR so I would skip that one.

Next best would be Bowrington : MTR to CWB, get out at TimesSquare and walk west. Its reasonable size and middle of the road pricing.

For much bigger selection and cheaper prices, take the MTR to NorthPoint or ShauKeiWan. The markets are at the MTR stops. Tons of choice and much better prices.

You can always bargain, but not too much. You have better chance of getting good prices later in the day when they start cleaning/closing

    Thin white/red bags provided.

The Wan Chai one is not that far from the MTR if you come out the Johnstone Road exit, just across the road and then through the market.

    Thanks guys!

    So:

    WanChai (WC, Johnstone Rd exit)
    Bowrington (CWB, Times Sq exit)
NorthPoint (tram, Chun Yeung Street, leading onto Marble Street)
    SKW
    MK (Langham hotel)

    that's plenty.

Darn, my Wellcome and PnS don't have those live fish tanks.

Carang, I stay in Central, and with my work (and study) hours, I've not seen many neighbours yet to be honest - and those I've seen were all expats. =( Wait till I start frying some salted fish.

Why don't you go to Sheung Wan Market?

If you are up to some adventure, I would certainly go to Bowrington Street and Wanchai Road where you should get virtually everything you need.

By the way, there is a little shop that sells Wonton (Dumpling with shrimps) named Ji Yau (Freedom) Noodle is very good.
