The only thing risky about this is that since the car is not registered in any state of Australia, one might get stopped by the police. I once drove my NZ registered car around Melbourne CBD and I was told my car is not covered with TAC since it is not Vic registered yet and if you hit a pedestrian, you might get sued. The TAC actually helps to cover the accident costs in Victoria and that people cannot sue you.

Epic 3 day journey it might be, MI7... wouldn't want to think about it at all!!!

Sorry to revive a dead thread.

Anyone have any success shipping a car from hk to Australia recently?

Thinking of doing the same but most of the RORO lines I have contacted say they don't facilitate this.

    TIA

Yes, there hasn't been any RORO service from HKG to AUS for few years now.

Now, what is it that you are thinking about privately importing to Australia, what brand, model, year and how long have you owned and had the particular car insured for?

Answer these questions and I'll offer some pertinent advice specific to that vehicle and what will be involved and what to expect in regard to DOTARs regs/Compliance and registration requirements of a privately imported car into Aus etc. From a ' local ' perspective.

Well that should be tediously straight forward enough via your Aus passport, personal import requirements ie ( under PIS requirements ) .

So you have the 1.8T version of this car below ?

I'd get a quote from these guys ( below ) for all that is required and see how you go. It might be just simpler to sell your car in Hong Kong and just buy something else in Australia. The Turbo Diesel version of the A4 for that year is definitely more popular in Australia, the 1.8T not so much, so it might be sensible to weigh up all the costs involved if its worth shipping the car here.

    Good luck

Not sure if it is worth sending that car back home.

I sent a MR2 AW11 back to Melb on the "manufactured before 1989" scheme. Got a RWC and put on club plates. Vicroads did not inspect the vehicle at all.

I know the people running this company as they are business associates, very trustworthy, good customer service and very decent prices esp when compared to the big relocation companies in HK.
