    Permanent Residence in UK

I have registered as a British Citizen under the UK Nationality (Hong Kong) Act 1990 and my son is registered as a British Citizen by decent accordingly. Although we hold the British passports, my son cannot get the treatment as home student when he studies in a UK university.

My son commenced to study in an university in Scotland after his 18 birthday this year. Please advise what are the requirements and process to register for the permanent residence in UK.

Since this is a HK website for expats I suggest you try looking at

Basically to be eligible for the 'home' rate you need to have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for at least 3 years on the day that the course begins. If your son has already started the course, then it's too late to change status

Thanks Jimbo and MrRotavator for the reference. Yes, 'ordinarily resident' in the UK is the key.
