Dollar amounts are all relative IMO. If you've got a million bucks, then 1,000 isn't that much, but to a guy that's got little to his name, a thousand might as well be a million. Suffice it to say it was more scratch than I could have dreamed to come up with in a day... save selling a vital body part or robbing a bank.

so where does this information show up? anywhere else besides the immigration computer? did you get stopped trying to check in @ the airport, or?

Would not be at the check in. You'd be stopped at the immigration counter / e-Channel for questioning if you were flagged (and often this goes beyond just flagging your ID number .. things like name, DoB, Place of Birth etc etc are used to flag you).

In your first post you stated that you left Hong Kong 5 years ago. 5 years should have been enough time to settle this.

Most likely yes, Probably hoped that it would get written off.

but lots of people end up in this situation and some don't even know it. Either their contract said their employer was to deal with it, or they had a lousy accountant. I know of one situation where a guy tried to 'take care of this' for over 10 years, with inland revenue, by post and fone, and made no progress.

c'est la vie. sometimes you deal with it when you have to, not when you can.

But ignorance is not an excuse though, To cover your backside if you have to leave HK before you recieve a tax bill, Contact them and tell them of your situation and give them a forwarding address of where to send any correspondance.

If you're told that your account/employer will take care of it then give them written confirmation that this is the case.

You have to cover your back in all cases.
