This is a thread about HK internet providers, lack of honesty and decency is a given. In fact the same could be said of most service providers here.

I think if you contacted them and say you're leaving they'll let you cancel it without any issue.

HKBN couldn't provide service to my new address even though I had over a year left on the contract and they let me go without problems.

Bad idea. you have a contract. they will give it to collection agency. if anytime you come back to hk anytime, the collection agency will seek you with the outstandings and large collection fees.

for this kind of money is not worth this kind of trouble. you better pay it one off to complete you contract.

I agree in part, but also expats come from places where service providers are regulated and required to offer fair terms (which allow you to manage these problems legally). Here in HK, service providers scam customers regularly with no come-back. So I agree with you that people should not run out on their contracts; but I also agree with the posters who said that the service providers bring it on themselves!

I used to work for a major US bank in the UK and international, particularly Chinese, students frequently went on spending sprees just before they left the UK and unsurprisingly never paid the huge debts on their credit cards. Everyone does this, so don't make out it's just expats here and all the locals are honest.

HKBN were brilliant with me. Had a year left on the original 2 year deal, and all I had to do was provide proof of leaving HK, and they scrubbed the second year. To be honest I was ready to pay the remaining year, but the whole experience was amazing, dropped the box etc off on Friday and got an email over the weekend to say account closed no issues.

Excellent! i am glad they are getting the props they deserve and hopefully more people sign up to them.

However, i also hope that once they are no longer the upstart, they can still provide great service as well. Normally it is when companies get big, get pressure to grow profits, have pressure to focus on most profitable clients, where we see them under-appreciate their core market.
