Can you add another option? We certainly plan to stay for a good 5 - 10 years plus, as our quality of life here is significantly better than it would be in London - due to tax, earning potential, cost of commuting and everything other than rent.

But I wouldn't say we'd stay forever - HK wouldn't be somewhere we'd choose to retire or downscale for example, as the cost of living is high and the pace frenetic.

I'm just waiting for my company to fire me for browsing expat forums all day and then I will pack up and go home. But it's been over 10 years now and they still don't fire me yet, still pay for my kids to go to the international school here, so I still stick around. I am getting tired of this place though.

You post way too little - increase that ratio and you might get what you wish

Looking at recent threads, many long timers seem moving out or planning to move out soon..
A number of people we know, from Geo and our social circles have made their money, packed up and left over the last 3 years. Their moves seem to be timed with 1) getting residency sorted in the UK (home uni fees) or 2) made enough money in HK and kids leaving the nest / finding jobs.

For us, HK is home, but to appreciate it we need to leave for a few months/year or so, which may be timed around winning a 30M+ Mark Six round. Hopefully tonight.

I have been saying "Another 2 years and I'm out" for 10 years now. No idea what I should vote.

We’re leaving next year-after 8 years in 852- with primary aged children to Singapore. So many families in my circles don’t want to have their children grow up long term here, Singapore offers a much better quality of life all across the board.

Main downside for us is as a trailing spouse I think it's quite challenging to get a work visa in Singapore or start a business? HK is so convenient in that regard. I'd worry about becoming a stay at home parent as my job here doesn't have a Singapore office...

Both cities have + and -.Let's not kid ourselves in believing HK is better or worse than SGP. After a few years in SGP, you will most likely feel the same thing and move somewhere else - it's human.

It is possible though not as straightforward as HK. You get a 'Letter of Consent' which allows you to work, however, if your spouse loses his job (and thus drops from EP to Social Visit Pass) your LoC becomes invalid. One of my staff is in this situation right now. Not fun.
